Dr. Moshe Vardi,a computer scientist who has studied automation and artificial intelligence (AI) for more than 30 years, has his own nuanced view. As to whether intelligent machines are beneficial or detrimental, the Rice University professor says simply, "I view them as both."
Intelligent machines will bring convenience and safety as well as higher productivity, he continues, but they will also throw millions of Americans out of work.
Vardi spoke about smart machines last week in Washington, D.C., at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The Huffington Post caught up with him afterward to pose some pointed questions.
Industrial robots have been around for decades. Why are they andother autonomous systems suddenly such a hot topic?
We seem to have reached a tipping point with industrial robots, as their cost has continued to come down and their capabilities have continued to go up. Take a look at U.S. manufacturing. We have reached an all-time high in output, but employment is below its 1950's level.
The myth is that all the jobs are going to China. Actually it's mostly because of factory automation. There are already about 260,000 robots at work in U.S. factories, and the annual growth is in the double digits.
Which technological advances in particular have been most important inthe development of machines that can replace humans for many tasks?
For industrial robots, we have seen significant improvements in terms of both mechanical engineering and control engineering. These robots are smarter, more agile and cheaper!
For example, the Baxter robot is a two-armed robot for simple industrial tasks such as loading, unloading, sorting and handling of materials, which it can learn by watching a human do these tasks. It is sold for $25,000, which makes it suitable for small and medium-sized companies.
Suddenly we have new low entry point for companies. You don't have to be a Ford or a General Motors to buy factory robots.

Autonomous vehicles are seen as a key part of the robot revolution. Why are they so important?
The automobile has probably been the most significant industrial product of the 20th century. It has catapulted U.S. industry to its peak and has had a profound impact on U.S. geography, permitting the growth of suburbs and exurbs. Automating driving will unleash a dramatic change, akin to the introduction of the Ford Model T in 1908.
Following that, we can expect the bulk of our logistical supply chain to be automated. For example, a product from China will be offloaded from a container ship by an automated off-loader, taken to an e-commerce warehouse on a driverless truck, packaged there by a robot, driven to its destination on a driverless truck and delivered to the customer's doorstep by a drone.

You've said you expect driving to be automated within 25 years. Will it really take that long? What are the barriers to the rise of self-driving cars?
Transitioning from today's cars to tomorrow's driverless cars is not simple. Conventional and driverless cars do not mix well together; humans tend to have trouble anticipating how driverless cars behave and sometimes crash into them. Google has reported accidents with its self-driving cars, and it's never the fault of the Google car. It's human drivers crashing their cars into the self-driving cars.
We will have to re-write many laws that govern the use of automobiles on public roads. Since these are usually state laws, the process will be long, slow and agonizing. For example, current laws typically require a moving vehicle to have a driver. Will the software controlling the car be considered a "driver"? What about liability laws?
How will our lives be changed by self-driving cars? What will be the benefits, and what problems will they cause?
Worldwide, about 1.25 million people die from auto accidents per year. Something like 95 percent of these accidents are caused by human error. So by automating driving, we could save about a million lives a year.
At the same time, this change will have a huge economic impact, launching whole new industries and destroying old industries. About 10 percent of the U.S. workforce operate vehicles as part of their job, and the automation of driving will eliminate millions of jobs in the U.S. alone. But with so many lives saved, I believe it is a moral imperative to deploy the technology.

We can expect an epic battle between car companies and computer companies to dominate the driverless cars market. Also, cars will be used much more efficiently, so car ownership may plummet by up to 80 percent.We can also expect a significant productivity boost from self-driving cars, since the time we now spend behind the wheel is usually nonproductive.
What will happen to the truck drivers, cab drivers and other workers who are displaced by self-driving technology?
What happened to many U.S. manufacturing workers who have lost their jobs? Many have found new jobs, but many also left the workforce, which accounts for the significant drop in the U.S. labor force participation rate over the past 20 years. Not all of the workers that will be displaced by the automation of driving will be able to find new jobs.
What will that mean for the U.S. economy?
Our current economic system requires people to either have wealth or to work to make a living, with the assumption that the economy creates jobs for all those who need them. If this assumption breaks down -- and progress in automation is likely to break it down, I believe -- then we need to rethink the very basic structure of our economic system.
For example, we may have to consider instituting Basic Income Guarantee, which means that all citizens or residents of a country regularly receive an unconditional sum of money, in addition to any income received from elsewhere.

Do you share concerns about the rise of artificial intelligence -- that intelligent machines will one day do us all in?
Elon Musk and others are worried about AI systems developing autonomy and agency.At this point, we are incredibly far from being able to build such systems, so these worries seem a bit theoretical to me. In 25 years it might make sense to talk about a possible threat, but now such talk is really fear-mongering. We simply do not have enough facts to think about such threats.
The threat to jobs, however, is imminent and deserves our immediate attention, while we continue to monitor for other emerging threats.
What about the development of military robots capable of mounting attacks without input from humans?
Many people now call for banning what's being called LAWS -- Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems -- by an international treaty. The challenge is to define autonomy. What kind of human input is sufficient for "killer robots"? What about a robot that kills an enemy solider without human input in order to save our own soldiers? These issues need to be fully hashed out.
What in your view are the biggest misconceptions about autonomous systems and artificial intelligence?
We need to remember that we always tend to underestimate the time it takes to develop new technologies, but also to underestimate the impact of these technologies. AI took longer to develop than anticipated in the 1950s, but the risk now is to underestimate its impact.
What are your fondest hopes for the new technologies, and what are your biggest fears?
My fondest hope is that we will develop technology for the benefit of humanity. My biggest fear is that we will develop technology for the sake of technology.

Business :: Does Trump Really Pay Income Taxes?

However, he refused because he said that he was under audit. When the audit is complete, he says he will release them. I believe there are two major strategies used on his tax returns that make him reluctant to release them to the public. Here they are:
As you know, "The Donald" invests heavily in real estate. One of the biggest deductions for real estate investors is depreciation. The way they maximize the deduction for depreciation is to:
1) Increase the depreciable basis of the asset; take the higher of either the tax role or an independent appraisers evaluation.
2) Decrease the length of time the asset is depreciated, identify personal property assets. They can be depreciated over shorter lives.
Mr. Trump mostly likely has not paid taxes throughout the years by using a tax strategy known as the "Tax Deferred Exchange". This is a fantastic way to take all of ones profits from a sale of real estate and put it into a new property without having initially to pay taxes. When his property is transferred at death, the basis is adjusted to current market values, thus all or mostly all of the deferred capital gains tax liabilities can be eliminated.
How could you accomplish the same thing?
1) Funds from the sale should be held by a qualified intermediary or an accommodator until the exchange transaction is complete and the requirements have been met.
2) You have 45 days from the date escrow closes to identify an "up property" and 180 days to complete the exchange. The 180 days includes the 45-day identification period.
3) If you receive cash or reduction in the mortgages, its considered "boot" and you have to pay capital gains taxes on it.
One of the advantages of doing a tax-free exchange is that you retain more of the funds for investment and defer taxes to a later date. Postponing the taxes is a good tax strategy because, when the taxes are finally paid, theyre generally paid with inflationary dollars. The longer the payment is delayed, the lower the present value of the taxes and the larger the benefit of the deferment.
Donald Trump is proposing four tax brackets topping out at 25% No tax on individuals earning less than $25,000, couples earning less than $50,000. Replace the corporate rate with a maximum 15% tax. End tax break for business earnings overseas. Note how he would not eliminate the two major strategies for real estate investors.
Hillary Clinton wants to increase the capital gains rate. Bernie Sanders wants to tax capital gains and dividends taxed at the same rates as incomes for annual incomes over $250,000 at 52%. Ted Cruz wants a flat tax of 10% on capital gains and wants to abolish the Internal Revenue Service. Marco Rubio wants to eliminate capital gains taxes.
Trumps tax returns will show us many new strategies to reduce income taxes using real estate. The return, if its forthcoming, will make interesting reading. It will point out the difference between taxable and nontaxable profits. You may even be able to verify his billionaire status and determine if he is a huge taxpayer, or uses legitimate rules to avoid huge levies.

Google's self-driving car finally at fault in accident
That's what Google admitted when it said one of its self-driving cars was at least partially responsible for an accident with a city bus.
Google has previously said there were 17 minor accidents involving its self-driving cars, but said none of them had been the cars' fault.
But on February 14, a Lexus 450 hybrid SUV with Google's self-driving technology had a scrape with a city bus in Mountain View, California, the company's hometown. It said no one was injured in the accident.
Google said the car was in the right lane of a city street, and was about to turn right. But after initially moving to the right side of the lane, it moved back to the center of the lane to avoid sand bags that had been placed around a storm drain. The bus, coming from behind, hit the left side of the car.

"This type of misunderstanding happens between human drivers on the road every day. This is a classic example of the negotiation that's a normal part of driving -- we're all trying to predict each other's movements," Google said in a statement.
The company said the Google test driver who was behind the wheel thought the bus was going to yield, and the bus driver likely thought the Google car was going to yield to the bus.
"In this case, we clearly bear some responsibility, because if our car hadn't moved, there wouldn't have been a collision," Google said.
Google said its car was traveling less than 2 mph, the bus about 15 mph. Its car sustained some damage to the left side; it did not report what damage the bus sustained.
Google said it has accumulated more than 1 million miles of autonomous driving, and said it has made changes to its software to try to avoid future accidents like this.

"From now on, our cars will more deeply understand that buses (and other large vehicles) are less likely to yield to us than other types of vehicles, and we hope to handle situations like this more gracefully in the future," said the company.

Social Ethics
You can remove a man from society but you cannot remove society from the man. Truer words have never been said. Even if you are shipwrecked and lonely on an island la Robinson Crusoe, you will be straitjacketed about doing your morning business out there in the open. But that is how we human beings are created. We learned the meaning of modesty right there in the Garden of Eden, and it has hounded us ever since. Of course, the depth to which social consciousness exists in the human race varies from person to person, but it exists in everyone, without a doubt.
And yet, it is almost embarrassing to see how many people we meet everyday are totally ignorant of social ethics. They are conscious about society, all right, but they are simply baboon-like when it comes to obeying the unwritten social ethics that society has laid down since Genesis. Why the differences? Simply because everyone is not made aware of social ethics in the same manner. Social ethics are a part of a person's cumulative education, and that, of course, depends on observation. Different people observe in different measures, and that's the reason everyone has a different notion of social ethics.
Let us embark on a mammoth task now. Standardizing social ethics. Learning the right kind of social ethics. That's one thing that has never been attempted before. But let me try. We have to begin somewhere - this could be a good precursor to all the Neanderthals out there, a sort of launching pad. Don't worry; I'll make this quick and painless ;-).
# 1: Share
John: There's a hungry man outside, Mamma. Asking for food.
Mother:Give him your sandwich, dearie. I'll make you another.
Father:Yeah, all right. Just make sure you don't give him anything more from the larder. And ask if he can help me mow the lawn.
We are creatures living in a very symbiotic society. As such, we need to share. Give and take. And that becomes the first social ethic we need to learn. When you give something to a deserving person, it does come back to you in some way or the other. It's not necessary to give something material. Sometimes a smile or a pat on the shoulder could be the best gift you could give.
But remember to give within limits. Too many gifts can spoil a person. And you will be perennially hounded for more and more help. Give, but within limits; and when you have given, do expect some kind of repayment, directly or indirectly.
# 2: Acknowledge
Mother: How did school go today, John?
John: Oh, it was fun! Mrs. March actually praised my show-and-tell.
Mother:God bless her soul!
Father: Certainly! I am sure little Johnnie will be getting much more schoolwork done now. If only that big boss of mine would appreciate what I chip in for his firm...
Society is built when people begin praising each other's talents. Whether we are talking about the President or a newspaper boy, they are giving something to make this society roll. That is why it is extremely important to give everyone their due credit. I don't know about you, but when someone praises me for an article I write, I am just egged on to write a better one. So, whether it is a schoolboy or your grandma, they need their acknowledgment to work better for you.
# 3: Participate
John: Mamma, Justin's folks are having a garage sale this Saturday.
Mother:Yes, I know. Gina told me. I am baking some cookies for the sale, John.
John: Can I be with Justin on Saturday? There's no school as it is.
Mother: Sure! I'll be there too, anyway.
Father: Hope I can do something useful too. Now let me see what...
Living is fun when you live together. I am not speaking just about family, but the whole society, in general. Helping the Joneses out in their events is always fun, especially if you know that they will help out with yours too. Of course, we must not be meddlesome, and must understand when we are not required. Being human, you will have an inner sense of understanding that. Participation is required on a national and global level also. We must be aware of our politics and civics, know our rights and duties, and perform them wholeheartedly. Social ethics demands that we make a collective effort at success, like ants lifting a heavy tidbit of food. That's how companies and nations succeed - doesn't matter what size they are. Unity is strength.
# 4: Assert
John: It's Rupert again, Mamma.
Mother: What did he do now?
John: He ran away with my lunch box and emptied it behind a tree.
Father: So, did you fight him back, or simply came running here to mamma?
Mother: Peter!
It's like driving on the freeway. Even if you are sure you are driving like a real good taxpaying and law-abiding citizen, some speed maniac might come and mutilate your rear fender. Or the front hood if you are not so lucky. Is it worth being a Sad Sack about it? Not at all! We must at least have a tongue to speak out that we are in the right. And prove that to the authorities. Of course, we must not go the mafia way about it - that will only compound matters and snowball into unbearable things - but we must at least assert when we haven't done anything wrong.
When our nation's integrity is threatened by outside forces, what do we do? Sit back and watch Nickelodeon? No, we give it back every bit. However, in the routine walk of life, we do not actually fight, but we must surely Get up, stand up... Stand up for your rights... (thanks, Bob, you said it for me.)

John: I won the elocution too, Mamma. Here's the medal.
Mother: Lovely, John! Really!
Father: Wish someone would give me something for busting my bottom too.
Mother: Peter, why don't you learn to be a bit more optimistic and less grumpy about things? I think you are getting old.
Father: Ah! Let's not put back our snorkeling vacation anymore then.
Tell me frankly, how many weeping willows do you meet in a day? I am talking about those typical people who always carry some sort of complaint on their shirt sleeve. The government is going to the dogs, the traffic is gone bonkers, elections are a whole lot of garbage, bureaucracy is sickeningly crazy, etc. etc. Don't you just get tired of just listening to these grievances? But then, you will be surprised at how many times you complain yourself.
What we must actually do is, put our hands together and try, in whatever small way we can, to better the society we live in. Do anything we can. Plant a tree for all it takes. But do something to improve the quality of life. And, miraculously enough, when we actually do something constructive - I mean, something socially benefiting for which we are not paid any green bucks - we will be amazed to see how much more acceptable we become of the society we live in.
Social ethics are a very complex subject, and there cannot be any parallels drawn in the way different people must behave. But it does pay to be responsible for the society we live in, and endeavor to make a better place to live in.

Inequality can be dismantled at the root (Opinion)
Inequality is the byproduct of systems and structures -- intentional policies and ingrained prejudices -- that have over many decades tilted the scales in favor of some, while limiting opportunity for many others.
Here's what we can do: Attack inequality at its roots.
At the Ford Foundation, we have long sought to address the root causes of injustice. As we survey the state of justice, we see inequality as the biggest barrier to human dignity and economic opportunity.
We have affirmed that inequality extends far beyond the wealth gap. Inequality is political, social, and cultural in nature. It contributes to deficits in democracy and discrimination along racial, ethnic and gender lines. It is reflected in rising extremism, acute poverty, and even in the consequences of climate change.
While inequality varies by region, the underlying forces that increase inequality are remarkably constant. From Jakarta to Cairo, Rio de Janeiro to New York City, we found five consistent factors that contribute to inequality.
First is the pervasiveness of short-term thinking in markets. Market mechanisms that focus on profits in the short-term have huge long-term costs for our environment, health, and the potential for shared prosperity.
Second, we found that political institutions dominated by elite interests are significant drivers of inequality. In nearly every country, a small number of individuals and groups wield disproportionate power to shape public policies, while most people have far more limited access to influence. This imbalance undermines the promise of democracy and leads to a breakdown in social cohesion as people grow distrustful of government.
These first two factors contribute to a third: Broken social contracts. Today, a weak set of rights and responsibilities guides the relationships between workers and businesses, citizens and governments. The social fabric of our communities has been hollowed out by the lack of investment in public goods, public infrastructure, and the auctioning off of key natural resources for private benefit. This crumbling of the social contract means less upward mobility across the civic landscape.
Fourth, there's discrimination. Women, indigenous people, LGBT, the poor, and racial and ethnic minorities lack equal status and full rights. This discrimination is embedded in our cultures and institutions, and it perpetuates biased policies.
And finally, we see dominant cultural narratives that undermine fairness, tolerance and inclusion. These narratives reinforce stereotypes in society, and play out in media coverage that stokes fear without understanding, or in school textbooks that gloss over some of the difficult truths of history. Combatting narratives of intolerance requires powerful counternarratives that embrace -- and truly celebrate -- diversity and inclusion.
By identifying what we see as inequality's five drivers, we encourage those working on any one of these issues to look more holistically, more systemically and more deeply at the solving the problem. We cannot focus solely on the economic piece of the puzzle, or look at racial or educational inequality in isolation. Doing so treats symptoms while ignoring the disease.
We believe in the possibilities of this holistic approach to embrace it within our organization. The Ford Foundation is re-organizing itself so that every issue that we work on will be interconnected. We will look for solutions to dismantle these drivers of inequality which reinforce each other in pernicious ways by putting people at the center and addressing causes at the structural level. Our efforts going forward will also support other institutions, individuals and ideas seeking to disrupt these interconnected drivers of inequality.
The stakes are high because we understand inequality to be global, pervasive, growing, and a central threat to social justice and human dignity.
Ultimately, it will take all of us, working together, across boundaries of geography, expertise, differences, and belief, to uproot inequality and plant a new tree that can grow into justice, once and for all.

Can you improve brain health? Scientists weigh in
As baby boomers age, dementia and Alzheimer's could create significant financial and social burdens in the years to come. As a result, scientists are researching ways to mitigate or even prevent these dreaded conditions, and corporations are smelling a business opportunity.
In recent years, companies have developed a number of online cognitive training programs -- brain games -- to help improve memory and brain processing speed. They've been promoted as a fun way to help people stay mentally sharp as they get older, building on the widespread popularity of video games. In a sign of what some see as the commercial potential, Investors also hope to develop the world's first prescription video game.
So is playing fun video games really the answer to the threat of Alzheimer's?
Many scientists think not. According to the Stanford Center on Longevity (SCL) and the Berlin Max Planck Institute for Human Development, there's no reliable scientific evidence to support the notion that cognitive training can improve overall brain performance (disclosure:The author is a research scholar at SCL).
Indeed, 70 of the world's leading neuroscientists and cognitive scientists took the unusual step of signing a statement that directly challenges the claims made for brain games:
We object to the claim that brain games offer consumers a scientifically grounded avenue to reduce or reverse cognitive decline when there is no compelling scientific evidence to date that they do. The promise of a magic bullet detracts from the best evidence to date, which is that cognitive health in old age reflects the long-term effects of healthy, engaged lifestyles. In the judgment of the signatories, exaggerated and misleading claims exploit the anxiety of older adults about impending cognitive decline. We encourage continued careful research and validation in this field."
These scientists acknowledge that by continuing to play one of these brain games, people can improve their scores on the particular game they're playing. But there's no evidence that improving your gaming skills will help you remember where you left your car keys or the names of friends and relatives.
A recent article in Scientific American, written by a prominent psychologist, digs deeper into the research regarding cognitive training and provides evidence confirming the position taken by SCL and the Planck Institute. The author describes research he conducted that attempts to replicate the findings of the papers that ostensibly support the use of brain games as a means to improve cognitive health -- he was unable to duplicate these results.
Replication of experimental results is a key step in the process to build scientific consensus.
Both the Scientific American article and the statement issued by SCL and the Planck Institute identify methods currently known by science to help maintain brain health:
Enhance your physical health through diet and exercise. After all, your brain is flesh and blood, so what's good for your body is also good for your brain. In particular, there's evidence that aerobic exercise can result in modest improvements in cognitive functioning.Maintain an active social life, with stimulating conversations and activities with a variety of people.Continue to learn new skills and stay engaged with life.
Other tips to help with brain health include getting sufficient sleep, not smoking, and not abusing drugs or alcohol. Unfortunately, for now there's no known cure for either Alzheimer's or dementia. The best you can do is adopt a lifestyle that improves your odds of maintaining a healthy mind as long as possible. Also, you'll want a strategy to address the financial consequences of needing long-term care in your later years, since Alzheimer's and dementia are common reasons for needing such care.
Both SCL and the Planck Institute confirm that people can continue to learn new tasks and improve performance well into old age. The key is to focus your time and money on activities that are important and have meaning for you. If you really like playing video games, crossword puzzles, or Sudoku, and you want to get better at these activities, then by all means keep at it. Just don't expect that your overall intelligence and memory will improve.
On the other hand, if it's important that you improve your driving skills, taking a driving course is a good use of your time and money. If your idea of fun is to learn a new language, play a musical instrument or learn ballroom dancing, then taking lessons or even online courses is another good use of your time and money.
To put it another way, these scientists are saying it's probably a waste of your time and money to think of brain games or other such activities as medicine, or as a vaccination against Alzheimer's or dementia. Instead, aging boomers should take a cue from their youth: Do what turns you on. Get better at skills and activities that have meaning for you. Even if you don't get smarter, you'll be enjoying your life.

Fla. woman streamed live video of herself driving drunk, police say
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Authorities say 911 calls from concerned viewers led to the arrest of a Florida woman who was streaming live video of herself while driving drunk.
Lakeland police report 23-year-old Whitney Beall was using the social media app Periscope as she was driving Saturday. The video shows her saying several times that she was drunk. She also said she had a flat tire and didn't know where she was.
"You hear her saying she's drunk," said Sgt. Gary Gross, Lakeland Police spokesman to CBS affiliate WTSP. "I got to tell you I was a little shocked. After 30 years of law enforcement I hadn't seen anything like this before."
Other users messaged her urging her to stop driving before she caused a crash. Some called the police.
CBS affiliate WTSP reports that as the caller was giving police dispatch the details from the video, the video was turned off several times and the caller was unable to provide a vehicle description other than it was a Toyota. This made locating Beall more difficult for officers searching the surrounding area.

Eventually an officer logged onto the service and located Beall's car, and officers pulled her over.
A news release says Beall failed a field sobriety test and refused to take a breath test. She was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. She was later released on $500 bail. Jail records didn't list at attorney. Lakeland is about 35 miles east of Tampa.

Driver’s ed added to United Nations agenda
The United Nations on Wednesday embarked on a 10-year campaign to improve traffic safety around the globe.
Dubbed the Decade of Action for Road Safety, the campaign will focus on several elements to reduce traffic-related deaths.
The UN will attempt to persuade all nations to:
Strengthen laws and enforcement practices on such issues as speeding, drinking and driving, and the wearing of helmets and seatbelts; andTurn their attention to vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists, which collectively comprise almost half of all people killed on the worlds roads.
In a statement released via email to journalist, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the World Health Organization is in charge of the project.
Traffic accidents kill an estimated 1.3 million people every year and leaves millions of others injured or permanently disabled, the UN said.
Road traffic crashes are a growing health and development concern affecting all nations, World Health Organization Director-General Margaret Chan said in a prepared statement.
Road accidents represent the ninth-leading cause of death in the world today and are already the biggest killer of people aged between 15 and 29, Chan said. Between 20 million and 50 million others receive non-fatal injuries every year.
Traffic accident deaths are on the increase, the UN said, and current trends will increase the annual death toll to 1.9 million per year in 10 years, if nothing is done.

Google says it bears 'some responsibility' after self-driving car hit bus | Reuters
Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google said on Monday it bears "some responsibility" after one of its self-driving cars struck a municipal bus in a minor crash earlier this month.
The crash may be the first case of one of its autonomous cars hitting another vehicle and the fault of the self-driving car. The Mountain View, California-based Internet search leader said it made changes to its software after the crash to avoid future incidents.
In a Feb. 23 report filed with California regulators, Google said the crash took place in Mountain View on Feb. 14 when a self-driving Lexus RX450h sought to get around some sandbags in a wide lane.
Google said in the filing the autonomous vehicle was traveling at less than 2 miles per hour, while the bus was moving at about 15 miles per hour.
The vehicle and the test driver "believed the bus would slow or allow the Google (autonomous vehicle) to continue," it said.
But three seconds later, as the Google car in autonomous mode re-entered the center of the lane, it struck the side of the bus, causing damage to the left front fender, front wheel and a driver side sensor. No one was injured in the car or on the bus.
Google said in a statement on Monday that "we clearly bear some responsibility, because if our car hadnt moved, there wouldnt have been a collision. That said, our test driver believed the bus was going to slow or stop to allow us to merge into the traffic, and that there would be sufficient space to do that."
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority will investigate the circumstances of the accident, Stacey Hendler Ross, spokeswoman for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, said on Monday.
She said the Google car caused minor damage to the bus, striking the "pivoting joint," or flexible area in the middle of the articulated bus. After the crash, 15 passengers on the bus were transferred to another bus.
An investigation to determine liability is pending, she said.
John M. Simpson, privacy project director for advocacy group Consumer Watchdog, said the crash "is more proof that robot car technology is not ready for auto pilot."
A spokesman for the California Department of Motor Vehicles said on Monday it will speak to Google to gather additional information, but added "the DMV is not responsible for determining fault."
SOFTWARE REFINED
Google said it has reviewed this incident "and thousands of variations on it in our simulator in detail and made refinements to our software. From now on, our cars will more deeply understand that buses (and other large vehicles) are less likely to yield to us than other types of vehicles, and we hope to handle situations like this more gracefully in the future."
There has been no official determination of fault in the crash. Google has previously said that its autonomous vehicles have never been at fault in any crashes.
The Mountain View Police Department said no police report was filed in the incident.
A spokesman for the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration declined to comment.
The crash comes as Google has been making the case that it should be able to test vehicles without steering wheels and other controls.
In December, Google criticized California for proposing regulations that would require autonomous cars to have a steering wheel, throttle and brake pedals when operating on public roads. A licensed driver would need to be ready to take over if something went wrong.
Google said in November that in six years of its self-driving project, it has been involved in 17 minor accidents during more than two million miles of autonomous and manual driving combined.
"Not once was the self-driving car the cause of the accident," Google said at the time.

Teens Need Better Driving Practice From Parents, AAA Study Finds
When parents teach their teenagers how to drive, the experience can be filled with loads of pressure and anxiety.
"You got a red light. You got a red light," says one dad as his daughter nearly blows a traffic signal.
"There's a siren. You need to pull over. You need to pull over to the right!" shouts another dad as a patrol car speeds by the car his daughter is driving. "Did you not understand what I meant by pull over?"
Despite the stress and the emotions that come with teaching teenagers how to drive, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety says those supervised lessons are incredibly important, because car crashes are the leading cause of death for that group.

Teens have the highest crash rate of any group in the United States, and the first few years appear to be the most dangerous. In 2008, 1,368 U.S. drivers between the ages of 15 and 18 died in traffic crashes.
In a new study released this week by the foundation, AAA took an unprecedented look for four months at parents and teenagers as they hit the road during driving lessons. The study included 50 North Carolina families with teenagers driving with learners permits. Dashboard cameras were attached to the families' cars and parents were interviewed 10 times during the year-long learners period.
From the study, which was conducted by the University of North Carolina's Highway Safety Research Center, AAA found that parents did not spend enough time teaching their teenagers how to drive and that teenagers did not get enough diverse driving experience before they received their licenses.
Driving: 'The Best Way Is to Practice'Peter Kissinger, the foundation's president, said the most interesting and disappointing result of the study was the small amount of time parents spent teaching their teenagers how to drive.
The study found that parents spent less than two hours supervising their teenage drivers per week. Kissinger said the AAA foundation would like to see parents spend 100 hours supervising during a teenage driver's permit phase, although the majority of states require only 50.
Sixty-eight percent of parents in the study said that opportunities to drive together were limited by busy schedules.
"The best way [to learn] is to practice, with an engaged parent," he said. "Everyone goes through a learning process."
Kissinger said the leading cause of most deadly crashes involving teenagers was inexperience.
"A disappointing [result was] that only 20 percent of the time parents [and teenagers were] in the car at night, rain and heavy traffic. Eighty percent were found in benign or routine circumstances -- to and from school, to and from church. Parents need to give additional experience," he said.
According to the study, parents need to teach their children how to drive in all types of conditions -- weather, highways and in the dark.
Twenty percent of teen fatalities occur between 9 p.m. and midnight -- that's higher than the overall population.
Forty-seven percent of the parents who participated in the study said that after the year-long learner's permit stage, they still had one condition -- such as rainy weather or heavy traffic -- in which they did not feel comfortable letting their teenager drive. However, 37 percent of those families still let their teen get a license within a month of becoming eligible.
AAA Offers Some AdviceKissinger offered a few suggestions for parents teaching their teenagers how to drive:
When you are in the car with your child, pay attention. Give teenage drivers strategies for driving intelligently."Sometimes what I like to do is look two or three cars ahead of you to see what's going on," one father tells his teenage driver in one of the dash-cam videos.
Teach them to drive defensively and avoid freaking out. "Parents should push child a little," he said."To ensure safety is to spend time with the (teenage drivers) before they drive independently," Kissinger said.

The trainees clean the barracks for the next batch. Also trainees prepare their service uniforms (formal uniforms) for the graduation ceremony. More importantly, it is during this time the drill sergeant take those trainees who failed a test back to the testing area until every trainee passes. This happens most often with those who dont qualify with the rifle or those who fail the PT test (Physical Training test).
No matter how many times a trainee fails, he gets another chance: the same day or the next. Theres no yelling, just encouragement and instruction again and again. In the end, the trainee makes it. Trust me.
A trainee who doesn't make it even if he's motivated is very, very rare. However, it does happen. The most common reason is that he gets injured and misses a few weeks. Or something unexpected and serious happens back home and he is granted leave to sort it out.
If a trainee doesn't meet the requirements he does not complete Basic Training. But this doesn't mean he is fired. This treatment is provided to individuals of any ages related to sports at any level of competition. Another thing that matters is the location of your automobile driving school. Why Was AAA Founded Back In 1902? by Nick Messe
On March 4, 1902 in Chicago, nine regional auto clubs with a total membership of 1,500 gathered to establish the American Automobile Association. It was for the primary purpose of creating and promoting safe roads.
Today, they are a not-for-profit organization of 50 independently operated motor clubs with over 1,100 offices throughout the United States and Canada. They provide 52 million members with travel, automotive, insurance and financial services as well as discounts. They are headquartered in Heathrow, Florida.
In 1905, AAA began publishing road maps and hotel guides and in 1920 they went on to create the School Safety Patrol Program. In 1947, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety was established to conduct studies motorist safety. AAA is at the forefront of many of today's driver safety programs.
Up until the 1955 LeMans racing disaster, AAA sanctioned auto racing, including the Indianapolis 500. Because the accident distracted AAA from its primary mission, they handed over these duties to the newly formed United States Automobile Club.
AAA is responsible for the establishment of high school driver education classes in 1935 and the curriculum being used to be known as "Responsible Driving". They continually update driver education courses and many regional clubs have established their own driving schools.
In 1936, a pedestrian safety organization was formed with a grant from the Automotive Safety Foundation with the express purpose of reducing pedestrian injuries and fatalities. In the following year, they would acknowledge the cities and states that exhibited the most successful pedestrian safety programs. Research continues to be conducted by their Foundation for Traffic Safety.
In the early 1940's, AAA provided detailed highway information, maps and resources to the Advisory Commission of the Council of National Defense. It had previously done this during World War I to assist planning efforts. They made recommendations to motorists on how to conserve tire rubber anticipating a shortage during wartime and reducing speed to conserve fuel.
They were also actively involved in promoting synthetic rubber, carpooling, gas rationing and driver training programs in their effort to support the country during WWII. After the war, the AAA launched a new automobile safety program which was successful in reducing traffic fatalities over 20 percent from numbers before WWII.
The 1980's was the beginning of the high tech period. Scenic highways were included in their maps and the first in-car navigation system was proposed. Their North American Road Atlas made the New York Times bestseller list for paperbacks. Their presence online began by providing online touring information. This service later became known as the AAA Travel Match.
Today, they continue to provide emergency road service for their millions of members in addition to its detailed map and travel services. The many programs they have initiated over the last century continue to provide the country with crucial highway and public safety services.

RV Driving Tips, Critical differences about driving a Motorhome.
Driving Mistake #2:
As we got closer to Brunswick, we began to notice that there were more and more orange cones and warning signs appearing along the sides of the road.
We had gotten into a major highway maintenance area and the speed limits quickly dropped to 60-mph versus the standard 70-mph.
The northbound lane was still two-lanes wide, but with the reduced speed limit, the traffic was getting thicker. In anticipation of slowing down and for safety's sake, I eased over into the right lane and just kept up with the pace of traffic.
Looking ahead, I saw that we were approaching a bridge and that the two lanes looked like they had been narrowed, so I dropped down to a little over fifty-mph as I started onto the bridge.
Suddenly, there was the sound of a very loud truck horn, playing a tune resembling DIXIE.
I checked my left-hand mirror and there was a Low-Boy tractor-trailer barreling down the left hand lane and his right ttires were straddling the solid center lane markings.
I quickly looked to the right and the right edge of my rig was directly over the right-hand white lane marking.
I had nowhere else to go. and I realized that I had only two choices, in my mind. I could go right crossing the outside whilte llane markers and give the trucker more room, or I could stay where I was and get hit by the insane trucker coming up on me.
It was at this moment that I made a critical mistake.
I assumed that the truck driver had some right to cross over the center marking and to a part of my lane and that he was going to hit my Motorhome.
He didn't have that right and he wasn't going to hit us.. He should have pulled back and used his own lane and passed me with the same caution that I thought I was using.
But, I guess that driving a very large truck on the highway gave the driver some feeling that he had priority over other vehicles and drivers.
Anyway, I pulled further over to the right and my motorhome immediately took out eight of those bright orange plastic cones before I could come back into my lane. They made a thump, thump, thump sound as I struck each one and they each, in turn, tried to fly in different directions.
At this point, the trucker had flown by me and had gone happily on down the road that he obviously thought he was the King of.
I quickly checked my mirrors and I saw that everyone behind me had backed off and were dodging the errant orange cones that I had launched into flight.
I looked at my wife and she was sitting there, petrified. You see, the passenger seat is right over the right-hand tire and she was able to watch as each cone thumped under the motorhome body and then flew away, not five feet away, in front of her.
Well, I kept driving until I had crossed the bridge and the lane widened again. But my wife, after she had regained her composure, decided that we should have yet another conversation about my stupidity.
She described, in great detail exactly how stupid I was to; buy an RV in the first place, drive on an Interstate with my limited brain function, and even consider her ever traveling on a road with me again in this lifetime.

A Lexus drives down the eight-lane highway outside Palo Alto, California, in heavy rush-hour traffic. Except for the rotating cylinder perched on its roof like an oversized tin can and the word "Google" on its doors, it looks like any other car. In reality, though, it's a search engine on wheels.
The Lexus steers itself down the highway all by itself. The man in the driver's seat -- Dmitri Dolgov, a software engineer for Google -- never actually touches the wheel.
Dolgov explains what the car can do, which turns out to be quite a lot. It can steer, accelerate and brake automatically; it surveys its surroundings with cameras and uses radar to measure the distance to the car in front of it; and its laser scanner -- the cylinder affixed to the roof -- monitors objects in all directions.
"See?" Dolgov asks, pointing as a car swerves in front of the Google vehicle from the right. There's no need for Dolgov to intervene. The robotic car has identified what is happening and gently brakes until there is once again a proper distance between the cars.
With its 12 vehicles, Google has the largest known test fleet of self-driving cars. All together, the Internet giant has covered over half a million kilometers (300,000 miles) in these robotic vehicles, most of it on California's public roads and highways. The cars have driven through Los Angeles, around Lake Tahoe and down the famous hairpin turns of San Francisco's Lombard Street. They have become so reliable, in fact, that Google is now taking SPIEGEL out for a demonstration.
Self-driving cars, long dismissed as a utopian pipe dream, are rapidly reaching the stage where they will be ready for the market. "We're not talking about 20 years here, but more like five," says Sebastian Thrun, initiator and director of Google's project.
Five years until the first driverless cars hit the streets? It sounds like just any of the other science-fiction ideas that seem to percolate out of the manically creative world that is Google headquarters. But could it be that the company is about to show the automobile industry what the future of mobility looks like?
In truth, however, the real surprise here is something else entirely: Everything Google can do, carmakers already do as well -- they just don't talk about it as openly. In one European Union-funded research project, Volvo successfully drove a convoy of five vehicles that only had a human driver in the lead car. BMW recently sent a robotic car on a two-hour drive from Munich to Nuremberg. And Volkswagen and a research team from Stanford University have caused a stir with their driverless Audi sports car, which that has been zipping around US racetracks.Gradually Automating Cars
Although Google doesn't enjoy a monopoly on the field, its prominent position allows it to exert pressure on others and demonstrate the feasibility of the idea. The auto industry isn't missing the technology needed for the next revolution in mobility. It lacks the guts to put that technology on the market.
"The necessary technology for autonomous cars is already in place," confirms Lothar Groesch, an expert on safety technology. Groesch, 66, who holds a Ph.D. in physics, has spent most of his career working in development for Daimler and Bosch, the automotive parts giant. But now his job as a freelance industrial consultant allows him to speak his mind freely, rather than being limited to what his bosses want him to say.
Groesch recently helped Bosch with its development of driver assistance systems. He quickly recognized that, when taken together, all of the instruments designed to assist drivers added up to a technology suite that will ultimately make it possible to liberate cars from their drivers.
The question is whether or not people will embrace it. Carmakers' greatest fear is that this development will rob the automobile of its magic, reducing the once all-powerful driver to a passive passenger.
But the fact is that this process has already been underway for a long time. It began 20 years ago with the introduction of Electronic Stability Control (ESC) systems that apply targeted braking to individual wheels so as to prevent skidding and make sure that overzealous drivers don't lose control while accelerating around curves. Of course, most cars offer a way for people looking to drive the old way to switch the ESC system off. But, says Groesch: "That's foolishness in terms of road safety." And engineers believe that there is less and less justification for having drivers the better automated vehicle-control technology gets.
Today's cars come with radar sensors and cameras that can recognize, for example, situations where a collision may occur if the driver doesn't react in time. These cars first sound a warning, then brake fully, although often not until it's too late -- the vehicle still crashes into the obstacle but at a lower speed. "The car could do better, but it's not allowed to," Groesch explains. "It would make a lot more sense to intervene earlier, without first giving a warning. The warning only wastes time."
Freedom vs. SafetyThis is where car developers -- and lawmakers -- are forced to ask themselves some weighty questions. Is the experience of driving a car something worthy of preserving? Does it lose its allure when drivers are stripped of the freedom to drive their cars themselves -- and also of the freedom to cause accidents with those cars? How much blood is society willing to spill for the sake of our freedom to drive cars by ourselves?
No other invention in the history of civilian technology has caused as much harm as the automobile has -- not airplanes or electricity or even nuclear power. A person dies in a traffic accident somewhere in the world every 30 seconds, adding up to well over 1 million deaths each year. And the World Health Organization estimates that his figure will only continue to rise as more and more people in developing countries acquire cars. What's more, human error is the cause of almost every automobile accident.
As measured by capacity, commercial airplanes and trains are up to 1,000 times safer than automobiles. And the reasons are clear: Airplanes and trains are not steered by hundreds of millions of people who have received driver's licenses without any further verification of their character or intelligence. Instead, they are controlled by a much smaller group of experts trained for precisely this task.
Additionally, the controls for vehicles traveling by rail and air are largely automated. At this point, the primary function of the driver of a high-speed train is to regularly press a so-called "dead man's switch," which informs the automatically driven train that the driver is still awake and alert. The captain of a commercial airplane, meanwhile, turns on the autopilot shortly after takeoff, and only takes over the controls again shortly before landing.
What, then, qualifies an overtired traveling salesperson to manually drive his or her car 100 kilometers or more to get home through monotonous, steady traffic on a Friday evening? And is he or she really having any fun in doing so?From Deserts to Drawing Boards
These are the kinds of questions Sebastian Thrun was asking himself even in his days as a computer science student in the German cities of Hildesheim and Bonn. Thrun, a 36-year-old genius in his field, took up a position as a professor at Stanford University, one of the most prestigious universities in the US, and is now a developer at Google. Thrun explains that he lost a friend in a car accident as a teenager and sees this as his motivation for turning to his field, computer science, as the key to accident-free automobiles.
Thrun first attracted attention in 2005, when he participated in a challenge run by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the research wing of the US military. The DARPA Grand Challenge involved 23 driverless, automatically controlled cars racing through the Mojave Desert, in the American Southwest. The Stanford Racing Team, headed by Thrun, entered the competition with a converted Volkswagen Touareg and steered its way to victory on rough terrain. The first autonomous cars were off-road vehicles by necessity, because they still weren't able to orient themselves well enough to keep them safely on the road.
One young computer entrepreneur was a spectator at the DARPA Grand Challenge that day and took an interest in the new technology. Larry Page, a Google co-founder and something of a rock star in the Internet world, recognized the alluring possibilities of driverless driving. So he immediately hired Thrun and other key members of his team.
Google's fleet of self-driving cars has become an integral part of the mystique surrounding America's most successful Internet firm, which started out as something quirky and has since become rather uncomfortably omnipresent. So far, though, the company has only used its autonomous vehicles as a form of advertisement. It has no official plans to commercialize vehicles, nor does it give the impression that such plans are the works. "We have no need to open up a car company here," Thrun says.
What's more likely is that Google would seek out a partner, thereby giving the ailing American automobile industry with a badly needed technological boost. General Motors, Ford or Chrysler could eventually become a hardware supplier for Google's designs, something of a Foxconn for the automobile world.
Challenges and Progress
Dressed in a green fleece jacket, Thrun warmly receives visitors at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California, not far from Stanford. Just outside the entrance, Google employees playing beach volleyball are living representations of the company's aura of eternal corporate coolness. The formalities required for entry into the building, on the other hand, are roughly as strict as those at the Pentagon, and the company spokesman urges visitors to hurry. Google doesn't have all day.
Thrun, the computer science professor from Germany, has become an important figure at Google. He helped create Street View, the company's controversial compendium of photographic images of front yards and houses from around the world. Street View, Thrun explains, was a useful exercise in preparation for the autonomous vehicle project, since the streets that self-driving cars travel will also need to be thoroughly photographed first, although with a focus on a different type of data. Google Maps' collection of images, in other words, cannot be directly used for driverless vehicles.
Google's self-driving cars draw on a detailed directory of every street, building and bridge, all of which is stored on computer servers. Cameras and laser scanners mounted on vehicles check the images they receive from their surroundings against what is in this directory. In other words, this system's precision and reliability rely entirely on computing power -- something that is increasing at a furious pace.
Moore's Law, a standard principle of computer science, effectively posits that processing power doubles every two years. The first Intel processor, built in 1971, had 2,300 transistors. Today's standard microchip holds over 2.5 billion. And as computers' processing speed increases, so does the reliability of robotic cars. Just a year ago, Thrun says, the test operators of these cars had to intervene an average of once every 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles) to correct a mistake on the part of the automatic driving system. "Now we can drive 80,000 kilometers without having to intervene," he says.
That's impressive, but not yet a breakthrough. A human driver who made a serious mistake once every 80,000 kilometers wouldn't exactly be held up as a model driver -- and a computer that does so certainly won't be.
But Thrun tries to put things in perspective. His self-driving cars, he says, don't make careless mistakes. The cameras never ignore a red light, and the radar reliably prevents rear-end collisions. "In those areas," he says, "robotic vehicles are already better than humans."
The driverless vehicles are worse, though, at reliably identifying objects. "That's something we humans are incredibly good at," Thrun explains. He picks up objects from the conference table in front of him to illustrate his point: "Here, a telephone. A roll of tape. It's not something we have to think hard about."
The cars' cameras see these things just as clearly as the human eye does, but the computers take longer to assess whether or not it would be dangerous to drive over them. What this means is that a robotic car will slam on the brakes even when the object in question turns out to be just a cardboard box blowing down the street, because it can't immediately assess whether the box isn't actually a baby carriage. And if suddenly braking for a cardboard box in the road causes a collision with the car behind, who is liable?
"Robotic cars are still too polite, which means they can sometimes be a nuisance," admits Doglov, the Google programmer. The vehicles always err on the side of caution, braking for cardboard boxes and never cutting into a stream of traffic where each car is traveling closely behind the one in front of it -- something drivers sometimes need to do, because they can otherwise end up sitting for hours on a highway on-ramp, waiting for an opening.
But humans won't always trump computers even when it comes to distinguishing between boxes and baby carriages, one of humanity's last bastions in its competition against artificial intelligence. When Thrun says this technology will be ready to go into mass production in five years, he's assuming that computing power will continue to multiply -- and that's a realistic assumption. Though high, the standards that need to met are attainable.
Pioneering Steps at Daimler
However, this isn't the first time that computer technology and automotive engineering have clashed. These are two industries with two very different approaches to the issue of susceptibility to failure. If a home computer crashes, the user simply boots it up again. But if the same thing occurs to the system that controls a car's safety functions, it could be life or death.
"Before we certify that a new driver assistance system is ready for mass production, it needs to have completed millions of kilometers of test driving without any errors," says Jochen Hermann, head of development for this product sector at Mercedes-Benz. The Stuttgart-based Daimler subsidiary is viewed as the founder of the automotive industry, and still seen as the keeper of the Grail when it comes to safety technology. Many pioneering driver assistance systems, from anti-locking brakes to ESC to brake assist technology, all had their breakthroughs here in Mercedes-Benz's research and development division.
Thrun, the Google developer, also has the highest respect for the company. "Mercedes does beautiful work, absolutely," he says. Such comments would seem to imply that Daimler might well number among Google's preferred potential partners for implementing its technological ideas. But Daimler might not even need Google at all.
The company has also developed its own cars with self-driving technology, the first of which will hit the market this summer, when Mercedes-Benz launches the next generation of its S-Class luxury sedan.
The S-Class is the company's flagship model, and the one Daimler often uses to introduce its latest developments. Mercedes took a decisive step toward autonomous driving, for example, with the 1998 S-Class, which introduced Distronic, a cruise control system with sensors for measuring and maintaining the vehicle's distance from the car in front of it. The 2013 model will go a step further by being capable of steering itself, making it the first to fulfill all the criteria of fully automated driving.
It will do so, though, only under one specific set of circumstances: in congested traffic. When the vehicle is traveling at walking speed, the driver can choose to switch on cruise control and take his or her feet off the pedals and hands off the steering wheel. The car then does everything itself, automatically accelerating, braking and steering. Simple sensors and cameras to monitor lane markings, along with radar equipment to measures the distance from the car in front of it, are enough to allow the vehicle to perform these functions.
"Traveling at a crawl is a very easy thing to master," Thrun agrees. But the new Mercedes S-Class can do more than that. It corrects the driver's steering at higher speeds as well, although in this case the driver must remain at least minimally involved, by keeping his or her hands on the steering wheel. Pressure sensors check that the driver is doing so and after a few seconds of handless driving, an alarm sounds and the autopilot switches off.
Legal Road Bumps
Here, Mercedes is following much the same principle as the dead man's switch in a high-speed train -- and for legal rather than technological reasons. Indeed, Mercedes could allow its S-Class to drive on highways completely autonomously. But it doesn't believe it's allowed to do so.
The reason for this lies with the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, a UN treaty signed on November 8, 1968. Article 8 of this document clearly states, "Every moving vehicle or combination of vehicles shall have a driver."
This same principle, carried over more or less verbatim, has found its way into the laws of the treaty's signatory nations. And, there, has remained, largely ignored for decades because the prospect of driverless cars was simply never an issue.
Added wording in these state-level laws further specifies that that "driver" is understood to mean a living being and not a collection of semiconductors. The German law on the subject, for example, reads, "Every driver must be physically and mentally capable of driving," before going on to talk about regulations concerning driving lessons. In other words, there can be no doubt here that "driver" means a person, not a computer.
Still, Ralf Herrtwich, who oversees the development of driver assistance and chassis systems for Daimler, believes there is "a lack of clear regulations." And, indeed, there is no doubt that technological developments in this area far have far outpaced amendments in the applicable laws. Even the new S-Class' autonomous driving capabilities in low-speed traffic exist somewhere on the edge of what the law allows, putting Mercedes' new luxury sedan in a legal gray area.
Thrun, the Google researcher, takes a less delicate view when it comes to the situation in the US. "No state in the US expressly forbids autonomous driving," he says. Nevada, in fact, expressly allows it and is currently working to establish more precise regulations. California and other states plan to follow Nevada's example.
Utopian? Or Feasible?
This open-mindedness on the part of the authorities ties in with certain economic policy interests. The computer industry is the last true bastion of the American Dream, the last economic sector in the US that is entirely intact and has the potential for boundless growth. Apple and Google are what General Motors once was, and Google's self-driving car is tantamount to an embodiment of the belief in digital progress.
Thrun, almost boyish-looking despite his 45 years, is perfect for his role as a major player in this pursuit. He took time off from his job at Stanford to found a free online higher-education portal called Udacity as a way of democratizing education, and he likewise sees his driverless car as serving a redemptive societal function. "Think of all the people who are blind or suffer from Parkinson's or Alzheimer's," he says. "Millions of Americans are denied the privilege of driving on health grounds."
In one advertising video, Google technicians have a man who is almost completely blind take the driver's seat of an autonomous Toyota Prius, which drives the man to do his shopping. To film this video, the car was surrounded by a police escort -- in the real world, it's still too soon for blind reliance on digital robotic driving.
What, then, is actually possible here and what is not? Designers in the automotive industry find Google's showy celebrations of its autonomous vehicles unsettling. Daimler developer Herrtwich, for example, finds it inappropriate to act as if computer-steered vehicles will soon be able to navigate through the fray of urban traffic. "City traffic is an utterly chaotic situation, and designing autonomous cars that can drive in it is not even one of our goals at this point," he says. "Autonomous driving in monotonous, steady highway traffic is a far more reasonable and feasible goal."
Still, even some conservative German designers take things considerably further. "The pace of development in electronics has often been underestimated," says Groesch, the industrial consultant. In another project with Daimler and Bosch, Groesch worked on developing airbag controls. In the beginning, it was widely believed to be impossible to develop sensors that would react quickly enough to deploy side airbags in time. Today, such airbags are an industry standard.Reducing Mistakes to an Acceptable Level
That Groesch no longer considers autonomous driving a purely utopian vision is owed to one key piece of technology that has advanced by leaps and bounds: "Laser scanning," he explains, "is unbeatable at identifying traffic entering from the side."
Capable of up to 10 revolutions per second, these scanners fire 60 laser beams or more in a 360-degree arc around the vehicle. The beams are invisible to the eye and pose no danger to humans, but they strike objects and bounce back as pulses of light. From the time lapse between pulses, the computer can measure the car's distance from objects.
This allows the vehicle to establish a three-dimensional image of its surroundings to a distance of up to 100 meters (330 feet) -- a more comprehensive view than is possible with the human senses. Interpreting the information from the laser beams faster and better than the brain can interpret feedback from the eyes is only a matter of increasing computing power.
It's more than likely that, within the foreseeable future, autonomous cars will no longer make a mistake every 80,000 kilometers, but perhaps only every couple million kilometers. And someday they will outperform humans in every situation, even in chaotic city traffic.
The benchmark for developers in this field is ASIL D, under ISO 26262, an international standard applied to the safety of electronic and electric systems in automobiles. The standard stipulates that failures should be nearly eliminated -- a tall order when it comes to this sort of mobile technology. What happens when condensation or snow blurs a laser's lens, even if just for a few seconds? "Driving autonomously through Nevada on a sunny day is fairly easy," says Daimler developer Herrtwich. But in a flurry of snow in the mountains, the world looks very different for cameras and lasers.
Fading Interest in Driving?How many mistakes can a robotic car make and still be unquestionably better than a human driver? There's no question that the first autonomous car to run over a person will receive more attention by far than the thousand human-driven cars that will undoubtedly do the same on the same day.
Manufacturers, meanwhile, expect to meet with fewer reservations toward self-driving cars from younger people, many of whom have little interest in cars anyway and would rather check their email during a drive than put in the effort necessary to turn the steering wheel. This is a generation that might even be grateful to let a computer take over as chauffeur.
Market researchers have observed a "trend toward de-emotionalizing automobility," in the words of Stefan Bratzel of the FHDW University of Applied Sciences, in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. In one study, Bratzel found that fewer and fewer young people living in cities own their own car, and that many no longer even have a driver's license. How else can car manufacturers expect to reach these potential customers, if not with a car that takes care of the driving itself?
At the same time, developers in the field are coming to a bitter realization. "Driving a car will increasingly be seen as a waste of time," says Groesch.
At Mercedes' development headquarters in Sindelfingen, Germany, designer Hermann ponders for a moment, then says something that no longer sounds blasphemous even here in this temple to the cult of the automobile: "There are plenty of situations where I don't want to have to drive because doing so isn't any fun."

The car has a single 20-kilowatt (27-hp) electric motor between the engine and a modified version of VW's excellent seven-speed direct-shift automatic gearbox. Kingsley: The wonderful thing from my perspective, and I hope I speak with some accuracy, is that if you know one Sikh man you know all of them, their consistency in behavior and their approach to life and their courtesy and kindness to others. When Darwan says, "This is the Sikh way," it is. It is not sentimental and it is not something he made up. It actually is the way they do things. And from my perspective as a portrait artist because I have to create a portrait with my characters to present to the screen I see a warrior race of men and women.
Q: Your father is from India, right?
Kingsley: My father's side is Indian, but from a long time ago. My father was born in Zanzibar in East Africa. There's a very large Ishmaeli community and he was Ishmaeli. My mother was part English and part Russian Jewish.
Q: Was there someone you knew that influenced your characterization of Darwan in this?
Kingsley: I've met quite a number of people in my career, but I do have an extraordinary memory. And even though they may drift into the periphery of my memory, I can bring them right back when I need them. When I was filming "Gandhi," every day I was greeted by my Sikh bodyguard-driver, and every day I drove to the set looking at the back of his head, his turban, how he gently moved from side to side whenever I asked him a question, and I thought about how he would have really ferociously defended me had anything happened.
One of the indelible images I have of him was him looking at me in his rearview mirror when I was sitting in the back of his Ambassador car. He was driving me away from the largest crowd you've ever seen on the screen in the cinema. It was a traumatic day for me because I was on the funeral wagon, hardly breathing, for nine hours. So, afterwards, I fell into the back seat. He got into the driver's seat, started his car. We had to move through 40,000 people to get back onto the main road to go home. He looked in the mirror and he said, "Well done, sir." That's all he said. I treasure this moment, so in this film I'm playing him. I've used him and he'd be very proud if he heard that. I used his stillness, his strength, his kindness and he his economy with words. The Sikhs are very unsentimental people but very emotionally developed.
Q: You typically play kings, leaders, military officials. This is sort of different working class character for you.
Kingsley: Well, there's also Don Logan in "Sexy Beast." (He laughs.) I was invited to the House of Lords one time and they're already really tough policeman outside guarding the building. And one of them said to me, "Excuse me sir, you played the underclass perfect."
Q: What trait did you most admire about playing Darwan?
Kingsley: His decency, in a very unsentimental and practical way. He has strength, and I love that about him. I remember working with the great Peter Brooke on "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and in a long conversation I had with him, he said, "An actor should always find a quality in the person he's presenting that is greater than the quality in you," because then you'll always have something to stretch to or reach to. Darwan's stillness and strength and dignity in the face of terrible adversity I think are phenomenal.
After his brother has been shot his family tortured he comes over to the U.S. to start a new life but still receives some sort of abuse and misunderstanding. Everything he wanted to get away from. And when Wendy asks him how he copes, he says he prays, and he really means it. He really believes that that temple and that prayer and that ritual sustain him. Although he is well integrated into his new world, he still needs that faith to help him through each day.
We were allowed to film at a Sikh temple, and as you know there recently were six people shot in their temple. But they were very welcoming. The leader had a turban and matching tie, beautifully color coordinated, Sikhs are such an elegant people. The temple leader made sure we were allowed to film there. So all those scenes were filmed in a Sikh temple. It was an island of peace, tranquility, order, affection, dignity and nurture in the middle of Queens, New York, which can be a little bit crazy.
Q: Your character and Patricia's character develop a close friendship, which doesn't turn physically romantic. What did you think of that?
Kingsley: The genius of Sarah Kernochan's screenplay was let's not set them in a park on the bench where there's oceans of space from which to escape from one another. Let's set it in a tiny car. They're right next to each other. And whenever he needed to shut off from her, he'd cross his arms to keep himself contained. It's a beautiful device in the film. All the signals are there. There's intimacy. You think you know how this film is going to end but you don't. It ends, I believe, not in being trapped in a car or in a relationship, but they take from each other their best intentions, which is his appreciation of a liberated woman, and her appreciation of a warrior man. The sexual politics of the film is more important than sex itself. In fact, the actual sex in this film (not between these characters) ends in fatigue and disappointment. You want romance? Here. Not much fun.
There's a great phrase from the great poet Rilke who said, "Two people who meet, greet, and salute one another," and I think that's what happens in the film. It's a beautiful phrase.
Q: Do you have a favorite moment from the film?
Kingsley: Thanks to our beautiful director (Isabel Coixet), there was one sustained unbroken beautiful moment. From day one, when dear Isabel saw me and Patricia sitting in the car, she started to cry. She said, "There they are."
Q: Did you create a backstory for your character?
Kingsley: I'd like to think he was a really good professor in his country because it's in his DNA to teach, and it's unstoppable in him. So that is beautifully translated into a driving instructor. You can see at the beginning of the film he's instructing on a much higher level, so that there's this beautiful migration of professorship in India to professorship behind the wheel in the U.S.
Q: There's a moment where the audience thinks their friendship may turn romantic. What do you make of the way that is handled?
Kingsley: Wendy (Patricia's character) is the guiding intelligence in the relationship then. It's her turn to say, "I don't think that's a good idea," and he accepts it. He takes that energy from her and gives it to his wife. So the energy is not lost; it's passed on and has a pulse.
Q: Your wife, Daniela Lavender, has a role in this as a friend of your wife. What was it like having her work with you on this film?
Kingsley: She's actually Brazilian but she learned Punjabi. She's a very good actor. I'm so proud of that performance. I asked our director Isabel if she knew Dani, and that she'd perfect for Mata. So Dani and I went for lunch with some Sikhs. All five men, and they were help helping Dani pronounce the word "pearl." There were five different versions.
Q: This is your second film with Isabel Coixet. How do you like working with a female director?
Kingsley: I do believe female directors, as well as our female writer, can bring out male vulnerability that some men can't because they can't face it. Martin Scorsese puts male vulnerability on screen perfectly, and Isabel does as well.

In the way a kid pushing a POS bike that was really junky seen the car and literally was doubled over laughing and pointing at the Pinto. It was so ugly that even this kid who had a junky bike was laughing at it.
At the other side of the extreme are the Pintos that have been turned into drag racing cars. These are souped up cars that can really go fast.
The Ford Pinto was available from 1971-1980. The 1971 model began to be sold in 1970 and was considered an overwhelming success at the time for the Ford Motor Company. The explosive nature of these cars that were yet to be revealed is very ironic, as the Ford Pinto was first released on September 11th, 1970.

Legends car driver dies after suffering injuries at Iowa short track
Joan Feller, a special education teacher and mother, passed away Wednesday as a result of spinal injuries suffered in an INEX Legends car race last Friday night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reported late Wednesday that Feller, 53, collided head-on with a stalled car on the final lap of the race and was found unresponsive when medical crews arrived. She was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, and later moved to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City where she was on life support.
Feller, whom the newspaper reported had been involved in racing since 2000, was in her first season of driving. The Gazette said Feller was an avid fan of Joey Gase, a 22-year-old Cedar Rapids native who has competed in two Sprint Cup Series races this year in addition to running the full XFINITY Series schedule.
Feller was an organ donor, and her family worked closely with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, as well as the organ donor registry to ensure her wishes were carried out, the Gazette reported.
Gase told FOXSports.com Wednesday that he will running a sticker on his car this weekend at Watkins Glen as a tribute to Feller, and that the stickers are being sold for $5 or a donation, with the proceeds going to Feller's family.
"I'm so very sad to hear (about her accident), but I'm glad her wishes are being met by being a donor," Gase told the Iowa newspaper. "I just can't believe this has happened."

Heel Raises: Stand facing the wall. Slowly raise heels up and down. Repeat ten times.
